We don't know if everyone has been in their innner world and seen their Zanpakuto there. And even though Renji used the machine too, he was almost able to materialize Zabimaru.

Well on the other hand this might be completly wrong and since it's just a filler there might simply be no possible explaination

renji didnt use the doll to materialize zabimaru. he could do it on his own already
